Bloomfield Township has achieved one of the highest environmental honors in New Jersey, earning Silver Certification from Sustainable Jersey—a statewide program that recognizes municipalities for advancing sustainability, community health, and long-term resilience.

According to a statement released by Bloomfield Township officials, the certification reflects years of steady progress and collaboration across local government, community organizations, and volunteers.
The Township earned 500 points across 43 approved actions in 15 categories, surpassing the 350-point threshold required for the Silver level.
It is Bloomfield’s highest-ever score and places the Township among the top 12 municipalities statewide, and second in Essex County, out of 469 participating communities.
Mayor Jenny Mundell said the recognition highlights Bloomfield’s community-wide effort to make environmental awareness part of daily life.
“This achievement speaks to Bloomfield’s collective commitment to building a cleaner, greener, and more resilient community,” she said. “It’s a reflection of our strong partnership with Greener Bloomfield and the dedication of our municipal staff, township departments, volunteers, and residents.”
Since authorizing Greener Bloomfield as the Township’s official Green Team in 2009, the group has worked closely with the Environmental Commission, Bloomfield Community Gardens, and township leadership to promote sustainable planning, energy efficiency, and environmental education.
Under its coordination, Bloomfield has renewed its certification every three years, advancing from its initial Bronze status to Silver in 2025.
Greener Bloomfield Coordinator Mollie Smith described the certification as the result of “years of collaboration and shared vision for a more sustainable Bloomfield.”
She credited support from township leadership and volunteers for helping advance projects that address energy use, waste reduction, public health, and community engagement.
Highlights of Bloomfield’s 2025 certification include initiatives to improve municipal energy performance, expand recycling and materials reuse programs, promote pollinator-friendly landscaping, enhance green building policies, and strengthen environmental justice and health equity efforts.

Bloomfield will be formally recognized for attaining Silver Certification and for its statewide leadership at the Sustainable Jersey Annual Luncheon during the League of Municipalities Conference in Atlantic City on November 18, 2025.
“As we celebrate this milestone, our focus is already on what’s next,” Mayor Mundell said. “Sustainability isn’t a finish line, it’s an ongoing commitment to innovation, equity, and community well-being. We’re proud of how far we’ve come and excited to continue building a Bloomfield that future generations will be proud to call home.”
