Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Provides Outreach to Seniors to Avoid Becoming Fraud Victims

Bergen County

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella is pleased to announce a crime prevention initiative to advise county residents of the prevalence of frauds targeting seniors and how to avoid becoming the victim of scams.

Hundreds of senior fraud cases have been reported to New Jersey law enforcement since the beginning of 2020, costing our seniors millions of dollars.

Reports of fraud have skyrocketed during the pandemic, and senior citizens have been a vulnerable target due to isolation and increasingly complex schemes using rapidly advancing technology.

“During this unprecedented time, we have watched our senior friends and loved ones increasingly fall victim to scams perpetrated in person, virtually, or via phone,” Prosecutor Musella said. “It is my priority to keep Bergen County’s residents safe, especially our seniors.”

Prosecutor Musella and members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office (“BCPO”) have been speaking to community groups about common scams and providing a few easy tips to avoid becoming the victim of a fraud.

These important conversations also cover what to do if you believe that you or someone you know has been the victim of a scam.

BCPO detectives and Prosecutor Musella are available to speak with community organizations about the prevalence of these scams and the work that law enforcement is doing to keep Bergen County residents safe.

To request a speaker from the BCPO to address your group, please email outreach@bcpo.net or call (201) 226-5511.
