Police activity was reported overnight after multiple residents in Belleville reported hearing what sounded like gunfire near Branch Brook Park.
According to preliminary information, at approximately 12:45 a.m. Monday, several 911 calls came in from the area of Mill Street and Franklin Avenue, with callers stating they believed multiple rounds had been fired inside the park.
Belleville Police responded and canvassed their jurisdiction along the park’s perimeter.
The park itself falls under the patrol of the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, whose officers were also on scene searching for any evidence that a shooting may have occurred.
As of 4:30 a.m., no official statement had been released, and authorities have not confirmed whether shell casings or other evidence were recovered.
No arrests have been reported at this time.
The incident remains under investigation. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available from county officials.
