Bear Deterrent Spray Activated Near Millburn Catholic School

Authorities in Millburn are looking into an unusual incident where a bear repellant spray was activated near a Catholic school in the town causing about a dozen people to feel sick on Thursday.

According to preliminary reports, police and EMS responded to the St. Rose of Lima Academy located in the 50's block of Short Hills Avenue after several people began to feel sick just before 8:25 p.m.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and began to evaluate about ten people who experience non-life threatening injuries after a bear repellant was activated in the area according to reports.

The school building was evacuated and vented by the fire department before anyone was allowed back inside. Police did not confirm if the spray was activated inside the building.

The incident remains under investigation.
