Bergen County authorities announced the arrest of Alexis Cottrell-Nelson, 24, of Bayonne, on the charge of receiving stolen property.

According to officials, the arrest results from an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

Officials say on March 3, detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotic Task Force conducted a traffic stop of a suspected stolen vehicle traveling through Bergen County and determined it was a “re-VIN” stolen vehicle.

According to authorities, a VIN, or vehicle identification number, is one or more small plates affixed to all vehicles that permanently identify that automobile, regardless of ownership or license plates.

The VIN affixed to this vehicle did not coincide with the paperwork provided to detectives.

Detectives say they could quickly confirm the vehicle was reported stolen from Miami, FL, on September 25, 2022, and the driver of the stolen car was identified as Alexis Cottrell-Nelson.

As a result of the investigation, Alexis Cottrell-Nelson was arrested at the scene on Friday, March 3, and charged with third-degree receiving stolen property.

Cottrell-Nelson was released on her recognizance pending a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
