Authorities Rule Union Twp. Woman's Death a Suicide

The death of a woman found burned outside a township elementary school on New Year's Day has been ruled a suicide, the Union County Prosecutor's Office confirmed.

According to police, a passerby called 911 on Jan. 1 shortly before 3 that morning and reported seeing a woman near Hannah Caldwell Elementary School.

Upon arrival, police found the dead woman severely burned outside the school. 

According to authorities, it is believed that the unidentified woman set herself on fire.

An autopsy determined the woman died of smoke inhalation, said Mark Spivey, spokesman for the Union County Prosecutor’s office. 

The woman’s identity has not been released.
