Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable have announced that authorities are investigating a shooting homicide in the 200 block of Washington Street.
Shortly after 8:30 p.m., Newark police officers responded to a shooting call in the above area.
Arriving officers located an unresponsive male, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound in the hallway of an apartment building.
The victim has been identified as Alim Abdul-Ghafer, age 35 of Newark, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:48 p.m., according to Fennelly.
This incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.
