A Saturday night attempt to steal a vehicle in Nutley ended with one suspect in custody following a foot pursuit through nearby neighborhoods.

Police patrolling the 70s block of King Street began investigating after receiving reports of an attempted auto theft in the area.

When officers arrived, they spotted a male suspect fleeing the scene and immediately gave chase on foot.

During the incident, Nutley police notified neighboring Belleville authorities about the attempted motor vehicle burglary.

The suspect was described as a Black male wearing all black clothing, seen running through rear yards in the neighborhood.

According to preliminary reports, the individual allegedly attempted to steal a parked Kia, causing damage to the steering column in the process.

Authorities also believe the suspect may have been dropped off by occupants of a dark-colored sedan reportedly driven by a female with a male passenger.

That vehicle fled the area, and those individuals remain at large.

The suspect taken into custody was arrested without further incident. The investigation remains ongoing.
