A local teenager has been charged in connection with a secondary shooting that occurred during a violent incident in Asbury Park earlier this fall, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago announced Friday.

Authorities said Calvin Joseph, 18, has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun, and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

The investigation stems from a shooting reported on Thursday, September 11, in the area of the 100 block of Monmouth Avenue.

Officers from the Asbury Park Police Department arrived to find two adult men suffering from gunshot wounds.

One victim, identified as Tyshan Small, 37, was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

A second adult male victim was also taken to the hospital and treated for injuries that were determined to be non-life-threatening.

A joint investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau and the Asbury Park Police Department determined that Jerod Jones, 32, of Neptune City, was responsible for the fatal shooting and remains a fugitive.

Investigators later determined a second shots-fired incident occurred moments after the initial shooting at the same location.

Joseph was identified as the individual responsible for the second shooting, which did not result in any injuries.

Joseph was apprehended by Asbury Park police on Friday, September 12, and was found to be unlawfully possessing a firearm at the time of his arrest, authorities said.

Anyone with information regarding this incident or the whereabouts of Jerod Jones is urged to contact Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Aaron Shaw at 800-533-7443 or Asbury Park Police Department Detective Anthony Troublefield at 732-774-1300

The investigation remains ongoing.
