There is an active and ongoing investigation into a shooting incident that occurred Saturday night in Roselle, according to a statement released by the Roselle Police Department.
Police said officers were dispatched at approximately 7:07 p.m. on December 13, to the 300 block of West 5th Avenue following reports of gunfire.
While responding to the call, officers encountered a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of West 3rd Avenue and Locust Street.
Authorities determined the collision involved a 2024 Hyundai Kona driven by a woman who was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox occupied by three individuals.
The driver of the Equinox was later identified as the shooting victim. Both vehicles sustained significant damage and were rendered inoperable.
As officers secured the crash scene, they observed a man and a woman walking away from the area.
The man, identified as 19-year-old Je-Nyele Yasir Thomas of Bayonne, told officers he had been shot and needed medical assistance.
Officers immediately rendered aid and requested emergency medical services.
Thomas was transported to University Hospital in Newark, where he remains in stable condition after suffering a single gunshot wound to the torso that caused internal bleeding.

Police later secured the crash location and an area near 355 West 5th Avenue, which investigators believe to be the scene of the shooting.
