76-Year-Old Pedestrian Killed by Car in Brick Township

Police in Brick Township are investigating a pedestrian strike that killed a senior man on Friday night.

According to a statement released by officials, at 10:48 p.m., Brick Township Police Patrol Units responded to a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on Mantoloking Road between Fairfield Avenue and Piel Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that Mr. James Sommers, 76, was struck by a 2020 Honda CRV driven by a 66-year-old Brick Township woman as he attempted to cross the roadway.

Police said Mr. Sommers was unconscious, unresponsive and was not breathing when they found him.

Officials say officers initiated life-saving measures, which were continued by Brick Police Emergency Medical Services and Paramedics from Hackensack Hospital.

Sommers was transported to Brick Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, officials said.

The Brick Township Police Traffic Safety Unit responded to the scene along with the Ocean County Sheriffs Criminal Investigation Unit. Traffic was detoured for several hours while the scene was processed.
