A 6-year-old child suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Union Township on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

According to the Union Police Department, officers responded to a motor vehicle crash on Hickory Road at approximately 12:03 p.m. on June 20.

Investigators said a black Jeep Renegade was traveling eastbound on Hickory Road when a 6-year-old autistic girl suddenly ran into the roadway after emerging from behind a parked vehicle.

The driver, a 45-year-old Union resident, was unable to avoid striking the child, police said.

The child was transported to University Hospital in Newark for treatment and evaluation of injuries that were reported as non-life-threatening.

Authorities said the driver remained at the scene and fully cooperated with the investigation.

Police reviewed video surveillance from the area, which showed the Jeep was traveling within the posted speed limit at the time of the incident.

As a result, no summonses were issued.

The incident remains documented by the Union Police Department.
