10 Suspects Arrested for Newark Shootings

Newark Police officers are reporting the arrest of 10 alleged shooting suspects around the city. 

Newark Police arrested the below individuals on the following dates:

June 28, 2023 – Mr. Lloyde Darby, 57, of Newark, faces charges of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in a shooting that occurred on March 24, 2023, in the 200 block of 7th Avenue West.

Ms. Shanyah M. Thompson, 24, of Newark, faces charges of criminal mischief and weapon possession in connection with a shooting that occurred on June 22, 2023, in the 300 block of South 8th Street. A male victim was shot, Police identified Thompson as a suspect, a warrant for her arrest was obtained, and she was apprehended without incident.

Shooting

June 27, 2023 - Mr. Ibn R. Bronson, 38, of Irvington, faces charges of unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of prohibited weapons (large capacity magazine), and certain persons prohibited from weapon possession for a shooting that occurred on May 29, 2023, in the 300 block of 16thAvenue. Responding officers located a man who had been shot. Shooting detectives identified Bronson as a suspect and obtained a search warrant for his vehicle, which resulted in the recovery of a handgun with an extended magazine.

Ms. Cierra D. Hunter, 37, of Newark, faces charges of weapon possession for the discharge of a firearm on June 20, 2023, in the 100 block of Hanford Street. No injuries have been reported, but detectives recovered a handgun in the area. Hunter was identified as a suspect and a warrant was obtained for her arrest. She was apprehended through the Newark Safe Surrender Program.

Mr. Gabriel Melo, 22, of Newark, is charged with weapon possession, possession of a prohibited weapon (large capacity magazine), CDS distribution, and CDS possession for a shooting that occurred on June 6, 2023, reportedly at Bruen Street and Elm Street. Police responded to University Hospital on a report of a man shot. Shooting detectives identified Melo as a suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest. He was arrested without incident.

June 23, 2023 - Ms. Amenra Smith, 20, of Newark, faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, and conspiracy in connection with the June 17, 2023, shooting in the 800 block of South 15thStreet. No injuries have been reported, but shooting detectives identified Smith as a suspect. He was charged while in custody at the Essex County Correctional Facility.

June 20, 2023 - Mr.  Antwyne Walker, 24, of Irvington, faces four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and weapon possession for shooting at multiple victims in the area of Hanford Street and Evergreen Avenue on June 20, 2023. Concerned citizens in the area identified Walker as a suspect and alerted Police that he had tossed the handgun used in the incident in a backyard at the 200 block of Dayton Street. Walker was observed by Police in the area of Dayton Street near Foster Street, where he was safely arrested.

June 19, 2023 - Mr. Rashon Hayes, 45 of Irvington, is charged with aggravated assault and weapon possession for a May 14, 2023, shooting in the 800 block of South 17th Street. While no injuries were reported, Shooting Response Detectives observed surveillance footage showing a male exit a white pickup truck and fleeing after re-entering it following shots fired. Witnesses also reported seeing a possible shooting victim, a male who has not come forward, limping away from the scene. Responding officers located Hayes inside the pickup truck at the 100 block of Fabyan Place and recovered a 9mm handgun from inside the vehicle. He was arrested without incident.

Mr. Alrahim H. Claiborne, 30, of Newark, was also arrested in connection with this incident. He faces charges of aggravated assault, weapon possession, criminal mischief, and evidence tampering.

Mr. Alquan Graham, 38, of the Bronx, was arrested in his home state in connection with a shooting that occurred on June 4, 2023, at Van Vechten Street near Ludlow Street. Responding officers located a man who was shot. The victim was transported to University Hospital for treatment and is reportedly in stable condition. Police identified Graham as a suspect in this incident.

These charges are merely accusations.
