Update: Alleged Narcotic Debt Leaves Two Shot in Newark

Newark

An attempt to settle a $40 narcotics debt appears to have been what caused a shooting in Newark.

This past Sunday (Nov. 1), police were dispatched to a residence on the 300 block of Clinton Avenue sometime around 8 a.m.

Arriving officers discovered two bleeding male victims. The first victim, police found in the middle of the road suffering an apparent gunshot wound to the hand.

The second man - later identified as 54-year-old Stacy Turman (alleged assailant and building superintendent) - was inside suffering from a gunshot wound to the knee.

According to police reports, the man told police that he and Turman had an argument over a $40 debt owed for maintenance work.

The arguement escalated when the superintendent punched him in the face and brandished a gun. The man then claims was shot in the hand as he attempted to brush the gun away.

Further investigation revealed that the two men were shot after a struggle over a debt allegedly over a purchase of narcotics on credit and not maintenance work like initially reported.

Turman was charged with multiple weapons-related charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of an illegal weapon.

He was remanded into custody at the Essex County Correctional Facility on $200,000 bail.
