Five Injured in Overnight Car Crashes Around Newark

A busy overnight for Newark's first responders and the staff at University Hospital after about five people were hospitalized as a result of separate crashes in the city.

At around midnight, police and rescue crews rushed to the area of Central Ave. and Washington Street after receiving multiple 911 calls for an overturned vehicle with several trapped occupants.

Rescue crews arrived to the scene where they immediately went to work after locating the vehicle on it's roof with occupants struggling to exit.

Intense work by first responders had them remove three injured occupants from the vehicle.

Two of the victims were transported to University Hospital while the third victim was taken the short distance to St. Michael's Hospital where they all reportedly suffered non-life threatening injuries. One of the injured is being reported as a young child.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Up in the city's West Ward, a crash with injuries reported sent police and EMS to the 800 block of Sanford Ave. at around 3 a.m. where one person was transported to University Hospital suffering serious injuries. Police are trying to determine what caused the crash.

From the West Ward to the City's Central Ward had first responders rush to the area of Bergen Street and Muhammad Ali Ave. at around 4 a.m. where crews located a vehicle crashed at that location.

Rescue crews used strategic operations to free a person who was heavily trapped in the vehicle.

It took crews several minutes to free the occupant who was then handed over to EMS and transported to University Hospital suffering critical injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
