Newark Man Returning from Peru Stashed Cocaine in Food Products

Authorities arrested a man who they said stashed several pounds of Cocaine in food products while returning from Peru on Sunday.

According to authorities the 48-year-old Newark man who was returning from Peru was stopped at Newark Liberty International Airport with more than 10 pounds of cocaine stuffed inside food products.

A spokesperson from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection said that William Anthony Sanchez, of Newark, was stopped on Sunday after officers found food, drinks and Oxycodone pills in his checked back.

The spokesperson said, officers then found about 10 pounds of cocaine inside of nougat cakes, bags of coffee and powdered drinks.

According to officials, the drugs had an estimated street value of $170,000. Sanchez faces drug smuggling charges.

He was being held at the Essex County Jail on $250,000 bail.
