Update: Elizabeth Restaurant Robbed; Employee Shot

An Elizabeth restaurant employee was shot after suspects took off with an determined amount of cash, police said this morning.

Police responded to Hong Kong Kitchen Chinese restaurant, 160 E. Jersey Street, Saturday at approximately 9:35 p.m. for a report of a robbery in progress.

Upon arriving, units found a store employee, described as a 46-year-old Elizabeth man bleeding from a gunshot wound to the hip.

Witnesses state that two black males, who were dropped off by a silver vehicle, wearing black hooded sweatshirts entered the store under the guise of ordering food.

One of the males produced a handgun, pointing it at employees behind the counter, while the second male went behind the counter and removed money from the cash register.

As the male suspects attempted to exit, a store employee tried to follow the men. At which time, the armed suspect turned and fired one shot into the employee’s left hip.

The suspects then fled on foot with an unknown amount of cash.

The victim was transported to University Hospital in Newark in stable condition.

Detectives from the Elizabeth Police Dept. Detective Bureau are investigating.
