Newark firefighters responded to a working fire at a vacant building in the city’s West Ward Wednesday night, where flames were reported spreading along the rear of the structure.

According to preliminary emergency reports, firefighters were dispatched to 187 Sunset Avenue shortly before 10:15 p.m. on November 4, 2026.
Arriving crews encountered an active fire along the exterior rear portion of the building, prompting a Signal 11 response for additional firefighting resources.
Firefighters quickly began attacking the flames while other crews forced entry into the vacant structure to determine whether the fire had spread inside.
By approximately 10:23 p.m., crews reported that searches of the building were negative and that flames had not extended into the cockloft, the space beneath the roof.
Emergency officials reported that all visible flames had been extinguished and the fire was placed under control at approximately 10:30 p.m.
No injuries were immediately reported.
The cause of the fire has not been confirmed, and the incident remains under investigation.
