A woman was found dead following a late-night apartment fire in Toms River Township, Ocean County, Friday night.

According to information released by Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer, police and firefighters responded to the Highland Plaza Apartments on Highland Parkway at approximately 11:20 p.m. on October 23, 2026, after receiving reports of a structure fire.
Upon arrival, emergency crews observed smoke coming from a second-floor apartment.
During a search of the residence, firefighters discovered a deceased woman on the living room floor.
Authorities said the woman’s identity is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of her family.
An investigation conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Squad and several local agencies determined that the fire originated on a couch along the east wall of the living room.
Investigators concluded that the blaze was accidental and caused by careless smoking.
The Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office also assisted in the investigation.
