Good morning, New Jersey, and welcome to Sunday.
If you’re looking for a good day to stay inside, this may be it. The nor’easter that has been pounding our region is still with us this morning, bringing heavy rain, strong winds and the threat of flooding to Newark and much of North Jersey.
We’re waking up to a cold, raw and miserable morning around Newark, with temperatures in the mid-50s. The National Weather Service says rain will continue throughout the day, with some thunderstorms possible and periods of heavy rainfall.
Newark is expected to reach only around 65 to 66 degrees this afternoon, but with the persistent northeast winds, rain and damp conditions, it will feel much colder at times.
Winds will remain a major concern. The National Weather Service has a Wind Advisory in effect until noon for portions of North Jersey, including Essex and Hudson counties. Winds of 20 to 30 mph are possible, with gusts potentially reaching around 50 mph.
The National Weather Service says the nor’easter will continue producing bands of moderate to locally heavy rain, with widespread minor urban, poor-drainage and small-stream flooding likely. Isolated flash flooding is also possible.
Flooding will be something to watch closely around Newark’s Ironbound section and other traditionally flood-prone locations. Across the Passaic River in Harrison, motorists should also use caution around low-lying areas, including portions of Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard that have historically experienced flooding.
There is also a Coastal Flood Warning in effect until 6 p.m. for Eastern Essex, Hudson, Eastern Bergen and Eastern Union counties. The National Weather Service says vulnerable waterfront areas could see 1 to 2 feet of inundation above ground level. Newark Bay is specifically forecast to experience minor flooding around today’s high tides.
For those heading out for Sunday worship services this morning, give yourself some extra time and definitely bring the rain gear. Watch for standing water, downed branches and flooded roadways, and never attempt to drive through water when you cannot determine its depth.
Expect a dreary Sunday from beginning to end, with rain continuing tonight and additional showers lingering into Monday.
