Police in Newark are investigating an early Sunday morning shooting incident that left a vehicle damaged by gunfire in the city’s South Ward.
A ShotSpotter device activated in the 60s block of Frelinghuysen Avenue shortly before 12:50 a.m., alerting officers to possible gunfire in the area.
When police arrived, they found evidence that a shooting had occurred and canvassed the surrounding neighborhood. No injuries were reported.
According to preliminary reports, a person later entered a police precinct and reported that their vehicle had been struck by gunfire. Investigators determined that the vehicle was hit in the 40s block of Miller Street.
The motive behind the shooting remains under active investigation.
No arrests were reported.
