The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is now investigating the circumstances surrounding a shooting that left a juvenile dead in Newark’s West Ward Friday evening.
As RLS Media previously reported, gunfire erupted shortly before 6:15 p.m. in the area of South 9th Street and 15th Avenue, sending several Newark Police units to the scene.
Officers arriving at the scene found the juvenile suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was rushed to University Hospital in severe, life-threatening condition but has since died from his injuries.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is now involved in the investigation. Authorities have not released the juvenile’s identity, and no information regarding a possible suspect or motive has been announced.
The deadly shooting occurred approximately 24 hours after another homicide in Newark’s West Ward, where an adult male was shot multiple times near South Orange and Littleton avenues.
That victim was transported to University Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after the approximately 2:45 p.m. shooting.
The two shooting scenes are not far from one another. At this time, authorities have not indicated whether the incidents are connected.
