Essex County Prosecutor’s Office investigators are on the scene of a deadly shooting that claimed the life of a man in Newark’s West Ward Wednesday afternoon.
The shooting occurred near South Orange Avenue and Littleton Avenue shortly before 2:45 p.m.
According to preliminary information, Newark firefighters traveling through the area reportedly heard a barrage of gunfire near the intersection, with nearly a dozen shots believed to have been fired.
Police responding to the scene found an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The victim was rushed by EMS to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
One male was reportedly detained following the shooting. However, authorities have not confirmed that the individual was responsible for the shooting, and no charges have been announced.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the deadly encounter.
The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
