An ambulance ride to the hospital turned tense Sunday afternoon after a patient allegedly became irate and threatened EMS workers with ‘knife-like’tool in Newark.
According to information released by Newark Police officials, officers responded at approximately 1:41 p.m. Sunday, August 16, to an ambulance near South Orange and Speedway avenues.
Officials said the man had been picked up at a location in Irvington and was being transported to the hospital when he regained consciousness, became irate and allegedly brandished a weapon while threatening members of the EMS crew.
The patient reportedly told workers that he did not want to go to the hospital.
EMS personnel safely exited the ambulance and waited for Newark Police officers to arrive.
Police were able to de-escalate the situation and recover the weapon from the man, who officials said was intoxicated.
No EMS workers were reported injured.
The patient was ultimately transported to University Hospital without further incident.
