Authorities recovered a body from the Passaic River Thursday morning following a multi-day search that began after a man was reported jumping into the water in Newark earlier this week.
According to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, police and firefighters were initially dispatched to the 700 block of Raymond Boulevard at approximately 5:12 p.m. Wednesday, August 12, after receiving a report that a man had jumped into the Passaic River and did not return to shore.
The incident prompted an extensive multi-agency search involving Newark emergency personnel, the U.S. Coast Guard, New Jersey State Police, the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, Harrison and Lyndhurst public safety teams, the North Regional Task Force and other agencies.
The search continued Thursday morning, with emergency crews concentrating their efforts along the Passaic River.
At approximately 7:40 a.m., crews reportedly located a body in the water near the Bridge Street area in Newark.
Special operations personnel subsequently recovered the individual at approximately 8:13 a.m. and transported the body to the Kearny boat ramp.
Authorities have not yet officially confirmed the identity of the person recovered or whether the individual is the man who was reported jumping into the river Wednesday.
