Nearly two decades after an Atlantic City man was gunned down, authorities say a suspect has been taken into custody and charged in connection with the killing.
According to information released by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, Billie Woods, 44, of Atlantic City, was taken into custody Thursday, August 13, by members of the U.S. Marshals Service Regional Fugitive Task Force’s Atlantic City Division and detectives from the Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit.
Atlantic City Police assisted with the arrest.
The charges stem from the June 3, 2009, fatal shooting of David Nesbitt, 32, of Atlantic City.
Police responded shortly after 12:30 a.m. that morning to reports of gunfire in the area of 227 North South Carolina Avenue.
When officers arrived, Nesbitt was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was later pronounced dead.
The case remained unsolved for years, but authorities said detectives with the Major Crimes Unit spent the past several months taking a fresh look at the investigation and reexamining evidence collected in the case.
That review ultimately led investigators to determine that probable cause existed to charge Woods in connection with Nesbitt’s death.
An Atlantic County grand jury indicted Woods on July 14, 2026, on one count of first-degree murder.
Following his arrest Thursday, Woods was processed at the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office before being lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
