New Jersey

By: Richard L. Smith

A 20-year-old New York woman was killed and an infant was among several people injured following a crash Friday afternoon on the Garden State Parkway in Ocean County.

According to New Jersey State Police, troopers responded at approximately 2:57 p.m. on August 7 to the northbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway near milepost 75.8 in Lacey Township.

A preliminary investigation determined that a Toyota sedan driven by Johan Mendez, 26, of New York City, was traveling north with four passengers when the vehicle veered off the roadway to the left and struck a guiderail.

Police said the Toyota then re-entered the roadway and collided with a Hyundai sedan that was also traveling northbound.

The impact caused two rear-seat passengers in the Toyota — identified as Iisiz Lopez, 20, of New York City, and an infant — to be ejected from the vehicle.

Lopez suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

Mendez, the infant and the Toyota’s other passengers suffered minor injuries and were transported to an area hospital for treatment, according to State Police.

The driver of the Hyundai also sustained minor injuries.

New Jersey State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. No additional information was immediately available.
