A man suffered serious facial injuries after he was assaulted and robbed by a group of individuals in Newark’s South Ward, and police are asking for the public’s help identifying those responsible.
According to information released by Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr., the attack occurred at approximately 12:10 a.m. on July 24 after the victim exited an NJ Transit bus and walked westbound in the 400 block of Springfield Avenue.
Police said the victim was approached by a group of individuals, believed to possibly be juveniles.
As he attempted to run past them, one of the suspects grabbed him by the shoulder, causing him to fall in the parking lot of the Dollar General.
Investigators said the group repeatedly assaulted the victim until he was unconscious before stealing his iPhone, identification, credit card, and Beats headphones.
An unidentified passerby transported the victim to University Hospital, where he was treated for a broken nose and multiple facial fractures.
Surveillance footage captured the suspects running east on Springfield Avenue from Jacob Street before fleeing through the Home Depot parking lot.
Authorities are asking anyone who recognizes the individuals or has information about the robbery to contact the Newark Police Division. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Newark Crime Stoppers.
