A 13-year-old boy was transported to the hospital Thursday morning after suffering a medical emergency while swimming at a Newark recreation center, according to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda.

Police were dispatched at approximately 9:52 a.m. to the swimming pool at the Saint Peter’s Park Recreation Center, located at 378 Lyons Avenue, after receiving a report that a 13-year-old non-verbal autistic boy had suffered a seizure while in the water.

Recreation center staff and lifeguards quickly removed the child from the pool and immediately began life-saving measures.

The boy was transported to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.

Authorities said he was alert and breathing when he was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.

The incident remains under investigation.
