Young Girl Rescued After Near Drowning at Branch Brook Park in Newark

A young girl is recovering after she was rescued from the water at Branch Brook Park on Sunday afternoon, thanks to the quick actions of bystanders and Newark police officers.

 

According to information released by city officials, emergency crews responded to the area of the park’s boathouse after reports that a child had entered the water. 

Bystanders and responding Newark police officers pulled the girl from the water before emergency medical services arrived.

 

Officials said the child was breathing and conscious when she was transported to University Hospital for evaluation and treatment. The girl’s current condition has not been released.

 

A city spokesperson also confirmed that the girl and her family are Newark residents.

 

The incident occurred near the park’s boathouse, located at the southernmost point of the 360-acre Branch Brook Park near Clifton and Seventh avenues. 

The boathouse is adjacent to the park’s roller-skating rink and a playground area.

 

The circumstances surrounding how the girl entered the water remain under investigation.
