A Newark man has been found guilty of murder and multiple weapons offenses in connection with the 2024 fatal shooting of a man who was sitting in a wheelchair, according to information released by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Following about two hours of deliberations on July 24, a jury convicted Shaheed Hall, 36, of first-degree murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun, and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
After the verdict was returned, Hall also pleaded guilty to additional charges of certain persons not to have weapons and being a persistent offender.
Prosecutors said the shooting occurred on April 28, 2024, on Osborne Terrace in Newark.
Authorities presented evidence showing that Deshaun Winston, 50, of Newark, was sitting in his wheelchair and speaking with another man when Hall opened fire, striking Winston twice in the head and once in the neck. Winston died from his injuries.
During the trial, prosecutors introduced surveillance video that showed Hall and Winston involved in a heated exchange about two hours before the shooting.
Additional footage later captured Hall returning to the area and fatally shooting Winston, according to prosecutors.
Hall was arrested on June 14, 2024, at the Veterans Courthouse in Newark after appearing there on an unrelated matter.
Hall is scheduled to be sentenced on October 2, 2026, and faces a sentence ranging from a minimum of 30 years to life in prison.
