While fans packed MetLife Stadium for the FIFA World Cup Final, one of the biggest security operations was taking place above the stadium.
According to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), military fighter jets intercepted multiple general aviation aircraft that violated temporary flight restrictions over East Rutherford and nearby Bedminster on Sunday.
Officials said more than 10 unauthorized aircraft entered the restricted airspace, with three requiring direct military intercepts.
During two of those encounters, F-16 fighter jets deployed safety flares to get the pilots’ attention before safely escorting the aircraft out of the restricted area.
The temporary no-fly zone was established as part of extensive security measures surrounding the World Cup Final and President Donald Trump’s attendance at the match.
The restrictions covered a wide area around MetLife Stadium, and pilots had been warned in advance to avoid the airspace or risk interception.
Security around the championship extended well beyond the skies.
Federal officials also enforced strict drone restrictions throughout the tournament, describing the operation as one of the most comprehensive airspace security efforts ever conducted for a sporting event in the United States.
Hundreds of unauthorized drones were seized during the World Cup as authorities worked to protect players, fans, and VIPs.
President Trump’s arrival also affected stadium operations.
Fans experienced delays entering MetLife Stadium as security procedures intensified ahead of kickoff, reflecting the heightened precautions associated with hosting both the World Cup Final and a presidential visit.
Authorities are reminding all pilots to check FAA Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) and Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) before flying near major events, noting that violating restricted airspace can result in military interception, enforcement action, and significant penalties.
