Former Hudson County Superintendent of Weights and Measures Frank Alonso has been arrested and charged following an investigation into the alleged theft of more than $250,000 in public and organizational funds.

According to Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello, members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Investigations Unit arrested Alonso, 58, of Union City, on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
Prosecutors allege that between January 2024 and January 2026, Alonso diverted funds intended for the Hudson Regional Health Commission, the Office of Weights and Measures, and the New Jersey Weights and Measures Association into accounts for his personal benefit.
Alonso is charged with three counts of official misconduct, one count of pattern of official misconduct, two counts of second-degree theft by unlawful taking, and one count of third-degree theft by unlawful taking.
In a separate complaint, authorities allege Alonso also used checks without the account holder’s authorization for personal gain.
Investigators said the reported thefts exceed $250,000.
Alonso was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus and was released pending his first court appearance.
