A 61-year-old Newark woman was killed Friday evening after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross U.S. Route 22 East in Union, according to preliminary information released by the Union Police Department.

The crash occurred at approximately 6:57 p.m. on July 3 near Ball Avenue. Authorities said the woman was crossing the eastbound lanes of Route 22 toward the center median when she was struck by a gray 2017 BMW 330.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but the pedestrian suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision. Police said the victim was a 61-year-old African American woman from Newark.
Her identity is being withheld pending notification of her next of kin.
The driver remained at the scene, and no additional information regarding potential charges has been released.
The investigation remains active as Union Police continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.
Patrol Officer DeJesus is leading the investigation.
