The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is leading an active homicide investigation after a woman was found fatally stabbed inside a South Ward apartment Wednesday afternoon. 
According to preliminary information, Newark Police were dispatched to 991 Frelinghuysen Avenue after receiving reports of an injured person at the location just before 3 pm.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a woman, believed to be approximately 63 years old, suffering from multiple stab wounds inside an apartment.
The victim was pronounced dead a short time later.
Authorities quickly secured and taped off the area as detectives began processing the scene and interviewing potential witnesses.
Details surrounding what led to the stabbing remain under investigation.
Officials have not released information regarding a possible suspect or motive at this time.
Newark Police referred all inquiries to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, which is overseeing the investigation.
