Firefighters in Newark are investigating an overnight house fire that sent children and adults to area hospitals in the city’s North Ward.

At approximately 11:40 p.m. Saturday, firefighters were dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of Garside Street after receiving reports of a fire with occupants trapped inside.
When crews arrived, they encountered heavy fire conditions inside the home and immediately stretched multiple hose lines after learning the blaze had originated in the basement and was spreading to the upper floors of the structure.
Firefighters worked aggressively to enter the burning residence after receiving reports that several people remained trapped inside.
During the rescue operation, emergency medical personnel were requested urgently for a child who had been removed from the home. 
Additional EMS units were later summoned as firefighters continued searching for and rescuing other occupants.
According to Newark Police from the scene, a child around the age of 1-year-old child suffered burns after being found inside the basement and was transported to University Hospital for treatment.
Initial reports indicated that Two teenage victims and one adult were also taken to the hospital after suffering smoke inhalation.
All occupants were ultimately accounted for and received medical treatment.
The fire was considered under control at 12:15 a.m. A total of 23 people were relocated, including 11 adults and 12 children.
The cause of the fire remains under active investigation. No additional information was immediately available.
