As Americans prepare to honor the nation’s fallen heroes during Memorial Day weekend, law enforcement officials in Somerset and Hunterdon counties are urging motorists to make safety a priority and avoid getting behind the wheel while impaired.

The campaign, supported by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), carries the message: “If You Feel Different, You Drive Different,” highlighting the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances.

“Driving impaired is never acceptable. For some people, even the slightest indulgence is too much to drive safely,” Somerset County Prosecutor John McDonald said in a statement. “As everyone makes plans with friends and family this Memorial Day weekend, it is crucial to also plan for a safe ride home.”

Officials stressed that drivers should arrange transportation before consuming alcohol rather than making decisions after drinking.

They encourage residents to designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, call a taxi, or seek other safe transportation options.

Authorities also urged friends and family members to intervene if someone who is impaired attempts to drive. Taking away keys and helping secure a safe ride home can prevent tragedies on the road, officials said.

Motorists are also encouraged to report suspected impaired drivers to law enforcement if they encounter dangerous behavior on area roadways.

Law enforcement agencies throughout Somerset and Hunterdon counties will increase patrols and enforcement efforts during the holiday weekend as part of ongoing traffic safety initiatives.
