Police in Newark requested detectives to the scene after a person was found dead behind a building in the city’s North Ward Tuesday evening.
According to preliminary information, officers patrolling the 60 block of Kearny Street were flagged down by residents who reported finding an unidentified person unconscious and unresponsive behind the building shortly before 8:30 pm.
Authorities said the victim appeared to have been deceased for an extended period, as signs of decomposition had already begun.
Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and pronounced the victim dead.
A crime scene unit was later called in to assist with the investigation.
As of early Wednesday morning, investigators had not reported any immediate signs of foul play. However, the investigation remains active and ongoing.
