Hackensack police are investigating a fatal pedestrian strike that occurred early Friday morning at a busy city intersection.
According to preliminary information, the incident happened at approximately 12:45 a.m. near Essex Street and Summit Avenue.
Police and EMS crews responded to reports of a person struck by a vehicle and arrived to find an unconscious and unresponsive victim lying in the roadway.
Emergency responders provided medical assistance at the scene, however the victim was pronounced dead a short time later.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim pending notification of family members.
It remains unclear whether the driver involved stayed at the scene. Unofficial reports indicate the vehicle may have fled following the collision, but officials have not yet confirmed that information.
The incident remains under active and ongoing investigation.
