Bergen County authorities have charged a Hackensack police officer following an investigation into alleged falsified military records used to obtain paid leave.

According to information released by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, 31-year-old Forrod Bonsu of Hackensack was arrested on April 29, 2026, and charged with third-degree theft by unlawful taking, as well as fourth-degree forgery and falsifying records.

The investigation, led by Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella and conducted by the Prosecutor’s Office Confidential Investigations Unit alongside the Hackensack Police Department, began on February 6, 2026, after authorities received information regarding alleged forged military documentation submitted to the City of Hackensack.

Officials said the nearly three-month investigation revealed that between July 28, 2021, and December 7, 2025, Bonsu, who served as a Hackensack police officer, allegedly submitted falsified United States Marine Corps records in order to obtain paid military leave benefits totaling $18,689.59.

Authorities stated that Bonsu was taken into custody without incident and has since been released pending further court proceedings.
