According to preliminary reports, police responded around 9:05 p.m. to a farm in the 60 block of Walker Drive after receiving calls of gunfire.

When officers arrived, they located a black bear that had been fatally shot.

Officials said the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Fish and Wildlife division was called to assist at the scene.

The farm owner reportedly told responding officers that the bear had entered the property and, fearing for the safety of livestock, he discharged a firearm, striking the animal.
