North Bergen officials said emergency crews acted out of caution following a freight train derailment that initially appeared to involve a potentially hazardous chemical release, but was later determined to be non-threatening.

According to a statement released by the township, police and fire units responded within minutes to the derailment scene Tuesday, where they observed a leaking substance from a damaged rail car along with a strong odor that caused irritation, including burning eyes.
Based on initial conditions, including markings indicating the rail car may have been carrying ethyl acetate, first responders quickly implemented precautionary measures to protect the public.
Crews worked to cool and stabilize the affected cars while regional hazmat teams were called in to assist.
Officials said those early decisions were made using the best available information during a rapidly evolving situation.
Authorities were later informed by CSX Transportation that the material involved was polyethylene, a substance that does not pose an immediate public safety hazard under the circumstances described.
Despite the updated information, township officials emphasized that all actions taken at the scene were guided by a commitment to safety and an abundance of caution for both residents and first responders.
The incident involved multiple agencies and required coordination as details continued to develop in real time. Emergency crews, including fire and hazmat teams, have since completed their primary operations and cleared the scene.
Personnel from the North Bergen Police Department and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection remain in the area to monitor conditions and assist with ongoing efforts.
Officials confirmed that Route 3 has fully reopened in both directions near the derailment site, and traffic is moving normally.
Township leaders said they are grateful the incident did not result in injuries or significant property damage and will continue working with CSX and other agencies to ensure the safety of the community.
