According to information released by Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello, investigators arrested 27-year-old Zaire Ferguson of Carteret on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.

Ferguson is facing multiple charges, including second-degree death by auto, along with assault by auto and additional charges related to causing death and serious bodily injury while driving with a suspended license.

Authorities said he was taken into custody at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.

The charges stem from a collision that occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. on January 8, 2026, when two pedestrians were struck on Woodland Drive inside West Hudson Park.

Responding officers from the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office located two male victims at the scene, both suffering serious injuries.

Both victims were transported to University Hospital for treatment.

One of the victims, Gary Gross, 58, of Kearny, later died from his injuries on January 15, 2026.

The second victim survived, though the extent of his injuries was not immediately disclosed.

Authorities said the driver remained at the scene following the crash. The investigation was conducted by members of the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit.
