Anglers across New Jersey will see a major boost to this year’s spring trout fishing season, with more time on the water, expanded locations, and updated regulations aimed at improving the experience.

According to information sent by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, the 2026 trout season officially opens at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 11.
This year brings 19 additional fishing days and more than 20 new ponds added for stocking, giving anglers greater access statewide.
Officials say more than 180,000 rainbow trout will be stocked this spring, along with approximately 20,000 brown trout supplied through a partnership with the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission.
By the end of the season, the total number of stocked rainbow trout is expected to exceed 570,000.
In addition to the standard stocking, between 6,000 and 7,000 larger broodstock trout, ranging from 14 to 26 inches, will be released into select waters, offering anglers the chance to catch trophy-sized fish.
The updated season also includes simplified regulations, part of a broader effort by state officials to make fishing rules easier to understand while expanding recreational opportunities for both beginners and experienced anglers.
Environmental officials say the changes are the result of extensive planning, including feedback from anglers and coordination with the state’s Fish & Game Council.

With more fish, more locations, and a longer season, New Jersey’s trout opener is expected to draw strong participation as residents head outdoors for one of the state’s most popular spring traditions.
