A senior correctional officer with the New Jersey Department of Corrections has been indicted on multiple charges tied to an alleged assault on an inmate and efforts to conceal what happened, according to a press release from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.

Officials announced that a state grand jury returned a 12-count indictment against Daniel Petoia, 34, of Manahawkin, on March 26, 2026.
Authorities allege the incident took place on December 20, 2024, inside New Jersey State Prison in Trenton.
According to investigators, Petoia is accused of falsely claiming an inmate possessed a weapon, then using unjustified force against the individual.
The indictment alleges the officer struck the inmate multiple times, including while the victim was on the ground, causing significant injury.
Prosecutors further allege that Petoia later filed inaccurate official reports in an attempt to justify the incident.
However, evidence gathered during the investigation determined that the account provided did not match what actually occurred.
The charges outlined in the indictment include official misconduct, aggravated assault, weapons possession, tampering with public records, falsifying records, making false reports, and tampering with evidence.
Authorities said the case underscores the importance of accountability within the corrections system, particularly when force is used against individuals in custody.
If convicted, Petoia faces a range of penalties depending on the charges, including potential prison time.
