Authorities in Essex County are investigating a shots-fired incident reported Tuesday evening near a park in Newark’s South Ward.

Just before 8:30 p.m., a ShotSpotter device detected gunfire in the area of Elizabeth Avenue and Renner Avenue, prompting a response from Newark police and the Essex County Sheriff’s Office.
Responding units canvassed the area, including sections of Weequahic Park, searching for possible victims and additional evidence.
Officials reported that no victims were located at the scene.
However, shell casings were recovered, confirming gunfire in the area.
The investigation was turned over to the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, which has launched an active and ongoing probe into the incident.

At this time, no arrests have been reported, and the motive for the shooting remains unclear.
