Walmart in Union Hiring Cashiers as Store Scales Back Self-Checkout Lanes

Union County

Residents in Union Township looking for work may want to take note a major retailer along Route 22 is actively seeking employees as part of changes happening inside some Walmart stores across the country.

The Walmart Supercenter is currently hiring for cashier positions, according to information shared locally.

Job seekers interested in applying are encouraged to visit the company’s website and apply online.

Store officials say the hiring push comes as Walmart begins shifting checkout operations in some locations, including the Union store.

The change involves reducing or removing certain self-checkout kiosks and relying more on traditional, staff-operated registers.

Industry reports indicate Walmart has been gradually scaling back self-checkout lanes in select stores across the United States and bringing back more cashier-assisted checkout lines.

The move comes after years of heavy reliance on self-checkout technology during and after the pandemic.

Retail analysts say the change is partly driven by concerns over theft and operational challenges associated with self-checkout systems.

In some cases, stores that removed the kiosks reported decreases in shoplifting and fewer security calls, prompting the company to reconsider the balance between automated and staffed registers.

While Walmart has not announced a nationwide removal of self-checkout lanes, the company has confirmed that changes are being made on a store-by-store basis depending on local conditions and operational needs.

For residents in Union and surrounding communities, the changes could mean more traditional checkout lanes,  and new job opportunities for those looking to work as cashiers at the busy Route 22 location.
