A University Hospital EMS crew found themselves digging out their own ambulance Saturday night after becoming stuck on a snow-covered street in Newark’s Ironbound section.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. on Ferguson Street, where residents say plowing efforts during and after this weekend’s winter storm were inadequate.

Residents on the block said thick snow and icy conditions reportedly made it difficult for vehicles to navigate the narrow residential block.

According to witnesses, the ambulance became immobilized while crews were attempting to move through the area.

With no immediate assistance available, EMTs grabbed shovels and began clearing snow from around the tires in an effort to regain traction.

It took several minutes of shoveling and maneuvering before the emergency vehicle was able to get rolling again.

The situation highlights ongoing concerns from some residents about street conditions following the storm, particularly in smaller neighborhood blocks where snow removal can sometimes lag behind main roadways.
