According to preliminary information, firefighters were dispatched shortly before 9 p.m. to reports of a blaze at a residence in the 500 block of West Scott Avenue.

When crews arrived, they encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from a one-and-a-half-story wood-frame home.

Firefighters quickly stretched multiple hose lines to attack the fire while receiving information that someone may have been trapped inside.

The fire had already extended through portions of the roof, creating intense conditions as crews worked aggressively to knock down the flames.

Once conditions allowed, firefighters entered the structure to search for occupants.

During the search, one unidentified individual was located in the basement. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in approximately one hour.
