Authorities in Newark are investigating a deadly shooting that claimed the life of a man early Saturday morning in the city’s East Ward.
According to preliminary information, gunfire erupted around 4 a.m. on Oxford Street between Raymond Boulevard and Raymond Boulevard, prompting a heavy police response to the area.
When officers arrived, they located a man, believed to be approximately 62 years old, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.
The victim was pronounced dead a short time later.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office was notified and responded to the scene to take over the investigation.

At this time, no additional details have been released, including information about a potential suspect or motive.
